Key Chapters
From the Arizona Desert to a Quest for Literature and Science
I grew up amid the vast silence of the Arizona desert, where the horizon seemed endless and life itself was an act of breathing. As a boy, I ran through canyons and spent nights absorbed in books that pondered the human condition. My mother taught me that knowledge was a light that led through darkness, and I became equally enamored with poetry and biology—the soul and the cell.
At Stanford, I pursued dual degrees in English literature and human biology. Literature illuminated the depths of the spirit; biology unveiled the mechanics of living. I began to sense that medicine was not simply the application of science but a way to understand what it means to be human. Reading *Paradise Lost* and Dostoevsky forced me to face the shadows of existence, while studying molecular biology revealed that every thought and emotion arises from a vulnerable body. I wondered—if our lives are fleeting, what allows us to seek meaning that feels eternal?
Cambridge Reflections: Consciousness and the Philosophy of Death
At Cambridge, where I studied the philosophy of science, I chased the elusive question: what is consciousness? From Descartes to Kant, from modern neuroscience to metaphysics, I explored the intricate ties between mind and body. Philosophy taught me that meaning is not imposed by the world but born from our conversation with death itself.
That insight crystallized into conviction: humanity’s greatness lies in knowing we will die and living passionately anyway. Whether through poetry or experiment, we all strive toward one shared truth—to understand life so we can accept its end. When philosophy offered no definitive answer, I sought the wisdom found only in experience. That path led me to Yale School of Medicine.
