Key Chapters
When I began examining the political landscape around climate change, I discovered an unsettling truth: the political right, particularly in the United States, understands the stakes of climate action far more clearly than many liberals. Conservatives who deny climate science are not simply rejecting data; they are defending an entire worldview. They recognize — perhaps more accurately than some environmentalists — that truly addressing climate change would require challenging the free-market ideology that underpins modern capitalism. Accepting the science means accepting regulation, public investment, and limits on corporate power. It means questioning globalization’s logic of endless growth and deregulation. And that is precisely what the right cannot allow.
Thus, their denial is not rooted merely in ignorance. It is ideological defense. Climate action threatens their conception of personal freedom, their belief in the sanctity of the market, and the dominance of fossil fuel wealth. When the right proclaims that environmentalists are using climate change as an excuse to expand government, they are, in a sense, ‘right’ — though not in the way they intend. Collective action at planetary scale does demand a reassertion of democratic control over the economy. I argue that instead of retreating from this confrontation, we must embrace it. Climate change demands transformation — not tinkering. We cannot solve a crisis created by deregulated capitalism with more deregulation. We must name the enemy: an economic ideology that puts profit above life.
While outright denial of science remains powerful in some circles, a new and subtler denialism has taken hold in many sectors of business and politics. I call this the era of climate delay — a phase where the existence of the problem is acknowledged but genuine action is avoided. Corporations now wrap themselves in the language of sustainability even as they expand oil exploration, support carbon trading schemes that allow pollution to continue, and invest in geoengineering fantasies. Governments sign agreements and set targets but fail to implement the policies needed to meet them.
This form of denial is arguably more dangerous because it lulls us into complacency. It tells us that the market will innovate its way out of crisis, that green capitalism and light regulation will suffice. But the evidence is clear: emissions continue to rise, and inequality deepens. The denial lies not in words but in deeds — in the structures of our economies, which reward destruction and delay reform. What we must confront is the moral evasion embedded in a system that talks change while reinforcing the same hierarchies that caused the problem.
