Imagine the unfolding of history as passing through four seasons, each lasting roughly twenty years. We call these the High, Awakening, Unraveling, and Crisis. Each has its distinct mood and dominant social pattern.

The High is a period of confident institution-building. Following a crisis, people crave stability. Individuals subordinate themselves to collective purpose, and society organizes around consensus and expansion. In American history, the post–World War II period exemplified this—an age of family, community, and civic faith.

Artists complete the cycle. Sheltered during Crisis, they mature in a post-crisis High, becoming sensitive, adaptive, and humanistic. They offer balance after upheaval. The Silent Generation played this role in mid-century America, nurturing the cultural calm that followed war.

These archetypes are not stereotypes; they are patterns of generational behavior recurring through history. When you recognize them, you begin to see the interplay of age and era. Each generation influences the next—the Prophet’s vision inspires the Hero’s action, the Nomad’s pragmatism tempers the Prophet’s zeal, and the Artist’s creativity brings renewal.
