Key Chapters

David Martín begins as a writer of sensationalist fiction, living among the ink-smeared pages of pulp magazines, dreaming of literary greatness. Barcelona in the 1920s is still tender from its past wounds, a city of narrow alleys and hollow-eyed souls trying to forget history. David writes under a pseudonym for a newspaper that treats crime as spectacle, and in the solitude of long nights he learns that words can be both weapon and refuge.

Pedro Vidal, his mentor and benefactor, stands as the gatekeeper to the world David covets. Vidal’s wealth buys opportunity; his taste buys refinement; yet his admiration for David is laced with condescension. In Vidal’s eyes, David is talented but doomed by class—a brilliant craftsman without pedigree. Their relationship is both mentorship and rivalry, built on admiration and jealousy. Vidal offers David help publishing his first serious work, but the help comes with invisible chains, as if the price for exposure is servitude.

In this stage of the story, David’s inner battle surfaces: the desire for respect versus the scorn of being considered a literary mercenary. His writing becomes darker, more personal, infused with the bitterness of longing. Every page he produces seems to echo the toll of ambition—the cost of proving one’s worth to a world shaped by privilege.

Eventually, opportunity arrives in the form of property: the Tower House, a strange, abandoned mansion offered at a price that seems too good to be true. Settling there, David feels he has entered the first chapter of his real life. The mansion’s silence promises refuge from betrayal and noise. Yet, as with all promises in this tale, the silence hides something else—a whisper beneath the floorboards, a presence watching from the corners. It is here, surrounded by memories of forgotten tenants and the scent of old paper, that the true story begins to awaken.

Strange things often begin quietly, dressed as coincidence. In the Tower House, David discovers fragments of another writer’s life—Diego Marlasca, the previous occupant, whose death remains cloaked in mystery. The patterns in Marlasca’s manuscripts mirror David’s own thoughts, echoing his fears, as if history were replaying itself within those walls.

It is then that Andreas Corelli appears, his letters arriving in fine handwriting, his tone at once courteous and otherworldly. Corelli is no ordinary publisher. His offer is extraordinary: he will pay David lavishly to write a book—a new scripture, a work meant to inspire faith and reshape the spiritual foundations of humanity. It sounds absurd, yet also divine. He explains his commission as art in its highest form, a creation capable of healing souls and bending destiny. David, worn from rejection and illness, accepts. He tells himself it is merely a project. But deep down, he knows it is a pact.

As the months unfold, the work consumes him. His health deteriorates, his isolation deepens, and the boundaries between fiction and reality begin to warp. Corelli’s presence grows intangible but omnipotent, following David in reflections, dreams, and coincidences too precise to dismiss. The Tower House becomes a vessel for creative fever—a physical manifestation of David’s inner chaos.

Through Corelli, I wanted to explore the nature of inspiration as both divine gift and demonic lure. Writers often speak of being possessed by their ideas. In *The Angel’s Game*, that possession becomes literal. Corelli’s commission blurs the line between blessing and damnation: the act of writing a sacred book turns into the act of fabricating faith itself. David realizes with horror that to invent belief is to play god—and that every god demands sacrifice.

As David’s manuscript grows, the echoes of Marlasca’s fate return. He begins investigating, following trails through the city’s archives and the mansion’s hidden corners. He learns that Marlasca, too, had struck a deal with Corelli. And like every soul who tries to fulfill divine commission for profit, he paid with his life. Every revelation brings David closer to madness, closer to the truth that creation and destruction may be twins in disguise.
