Key Chapters

After finishing my MBA at Stanford, I found myself drifting, restless. The world seemed vast and full of possibilities, yet none of them felt right. I wanted to do something meaningful, but I had no clear map. Then, one day, while writing a paper for a class on entrepreneurship, I stumbled upon my 'Crazy Idea'—the notion that Japanese running shoes could rival and outprice the established German brands like Adidas and Puma. Japan had already proven its manufacturing prowess in cameras and cars; why not shoes?

It sounds simple now, but back then, it was revolutionary. Running was a niche sport, limited mostly to track athletes and a few enthusiasts. The market was narrow, the capital nonexistent, and I had no partners, factories, or distributors. What I had was belief—the stubborn, persistent belief that if I could find a way to blend quality and affordability, something extraordinary could happen.

So I decided to take a leap. In 1962, I boarded a plane to Japan—a place completely foreign to me—and marched into the offices of Onitsuka Tiger, whose shoes I admired. I pitched myself as a U.S. distributor for their line. I may have exaggerated the size of my company, calling it 'Blue Ribbon Sports,' though at that moment it was nothing more than an idea and a name scrawled in my notebook. Against all odds, they agreed. That moment, when I secured the deal, marked the start of a journey that would define my life.

Looking back, that trip embodied the very essence of entrepreneurship: taking a risk while being completely in over your head, pretending to be more capable than you are, and somehow making reality catch up with vision. That’s where all great ventures begin—not with certainty, but with curiosity and courage.

When I returned to Oregon, my grand dream shrunk to the size of a car trunk. I began selling Onitsuka Tiger shoes at track meets, from the back of my Plymouth Valiant. I knew my customers personally—athletes, coaches, runners who cared about every ounce of performance. What I couldn’t offer in money, I tried to make up in authenticity. I was one of them, after all—a former Oregon runner who knew what shoes felt right.

It was around this time that I teamed up with Bill Bowerman, my old track coach at the University of Oregon. Bowerman wasn’t just a coach; he was a relentless tinkerer, obsessed with innovation. He would pour rubber into his wife’s waffle iron, experiment with shoe soles in his garage, and constantly push for performance improvements. Together, we formed the perfect partnership: I handled the business hustle, he drove product innovation. Blue Ribbon Sports began to take on a life of its own.

Those early years were chaotic. We were perpetually broke. Banks turned down loan requests; suppliers delayed shipments. My full-time accounting job became the lifeline keeping Blue Ribbon afloat. Yet, slowly, shoe by shoe, we built a community around our brand—a grassroots network fueled by relationships, trust, and word of mouth. We weren’t selling shoes; we were selling belief—the belief that athletes deserved better choices.

Bowerman’s waffle sole design marked one of our first innovations. It wasn’t glamorous, but it worked. It gave runners grip and lightweight performance, and it reminded me that breakthroughs often come from humble places. We didn’t see it then, but this spirit of experimentation was the foundation on which Nike would later be built.
