At the start of the story, I paint a picture of the late Yuan Empire in decay. The Mongol rulers, once fierce conquerors, had lost both discipline and legitimacy. Taxes drained the peasants dry, and the court was buried in luxury. Local officials squeezed the people, and famine swept the land. Like cracks spreading through a frozen lake, the empire’s unity began to crumble.

For the peasantry, life had become unbearable. Floods and locusts starved entire provinces, and government relief was a joke. When I describe these scenes, I do not want readers to see statistics but the faces of real people — men forced to beg for food, mothers burying sons lost to hunger. It was in this despair that rebellion became the only language left. The Red Turban Army — an alliance of religious sects and desperate farmers — emerged as the symbol of collective resistance. Although their banners shouted about restoring the Han people, their hearts were motivated by one thing: survival.

Amid the chaos, the political map of China fractured. Warlords rose as quickly as they fell. The Yuan generals fought like fire and water among themselves, and the imperial authority became little more than a distant name. In this maelstrom, anyone with courage and cunning could carve out a realm of their own. That, dear reader, is the soil from which Zhu Yuanzhang’s story would grow — a time when heaven’s mandate was up for grabs and a barefoot monk could dream of the dragon throne.

History often flatters emperors by glorifying their destiny, but when I tell Zhu Yuanzhang’s early story, I want readers to feel the grit of the earth he once walked on. He was born into a peasant family so poor that food was a luxury and death a daily companion. His childhood home in Haozhou was not a cradle of heroes but a coffin of despair — famine claimed his parents, bandits ravaged the countryside, and plague took everything else.

When Zhu lost his family, he turned to the monastery not out of piety but to survive. Yet even the monks struggled; temples too had to beg. And so began his years as a wandering mendicant, walking the long roads of a dying empire, learning in silence how the world really worked. This experience was his first education — one that no scholar’s classic could ever teach. He saw the corruption of officials firsthand, the hypocrisy of the Buddhist clergy, and the suffering of the common folk.

These early years shaped his character: cautious yet fierce, humble yet ambitious. When I describe young Zhu’s time as a monk, it is not to depict holiness, but to highlight his growing understanding of human nature. He learned how to endure, how to wait, and how to read people — skills that would one day let him outmaneuver armies and emperors alike. His poverty didn’t crush him; it carved his strength.
