Key Chapters
When Jinwoo Sung steps back into Seoul, there is no peace in his return—only the awareness that the air itself hums with malevolence. He senses the cold touch of otherworldly beings swirling at the edges of reality. The Monarchs are not simply preparing for an attack; they are orchestrating a reckoning. The Monarch of Frost, the Beast Monarch, and the Plague Monarch are ancient entities that view human existence as a stain upon the cycle of power. Their emergence in this volume marks the transformation of the story’s scale—from battles of survival into battles for cosmic dominance.
I’ve always sought to shape Jinwoo’s sensory intuition as a character who no longer belongs entirely to the mortal world. His instinct tells him the confrontation will not just be physical; it will test his allegiance—to humanity and to the shadow within him. Every scene of quiet before the storm in Volume 12 serves to sharpen this tension. The sky over Seoul feels heavy, the temperature drops unnaturally, and the ambient fear of hunters is palpable. When the Frost Monarch’s icy power drifts across the cityscape, readers understand that this is not a war fought only by soldiers; this is the reshaping of existence itself.
In those first chapters, Jinwoo prepares his Shadow Army. He appoints Beru and Igris, lieutenants as loyal as any knight, to positions around the city. The notion of command has shifted—no longer to dominate but to protect. The Shadow Army moving through Seoul’s streets becomes both terrifying and strangely noble: monsters defending humans against monsters. And in this paradox Jinwoo finds his purpose reaffirmed. The confrontation’s inevitability reflects how even ultimate strength cannot delay fate. This storm must break—and he stands ready beneath it.
When the assault begins, Seoul becomes a battlefield unlike any other in the series. Readers can hear the thunder of the Monarchs’ arrival—ice freezing skyscrapers midair, the roar of bestial fury tearing asphalt, and the stench of plague corroding matter itself. Here, I wanted to portray the fragility of human civilization under transcendent violence. Although modern warfare surrounds them, no weapon of mankind can harm these beings. Humanity watches, powerless, as its capital turns to ruin.
Jinwoo’s answer is immediate: his Shadow Army surges to meet the invaders. Beru flies with insectual grace, Igris slashes through frost giants, and the foot soldiers of shadow shield fleeing civilians. Yet despite the spectacle, Jinwoo feels the staggering toll of commanding thousands. Every shadow he sustains eats away at his vitality. Through this struggle, I explored how leadership can become a source of pain, how protecting others may also lead to one’s own depletion. As he clashes directly with the Beast Monarch, readers see Jinwoo’s fury and resolve tested beyond any prior limit. The Beast Monarch’s raw might embodies the primal chaos that preys on the weak; his taunts strike at Jinwoo’s lingering humanity. Their battle devastates blocks of Seoul, burning through the city’s core.
But the Beast Monarch does not fight alone. The Frost Monarch joins the onslaught, their combined power forcing Jinwoo to fight more defensively than ever. His ability to teleport and manipulate shadows begins to waver under immense pressure. Hunters try to aid him—their courage humbling—but they are crushed beneath forces they cannot comprehend. I intended these moments to emphasize the vast gap between human and divine tiers in this universe. The reader must feel not hopelessness, but awe—recognizing that Jinwoo strides now in a realm where no other hunter could tread. Every blow exchanged becomes a statement about endurance: how far can one go when the world itself seems to break beneath every step?
