The physics behind them is tantalizingly mathematical, yet their technological requirements are currently beyond comprehension.
Class III impossibilities fundamentally contradict physical law as we currently understand it. Perpetual motion machines defy thermodynamics; psychic phenomena, if ever verified, would overturn quantum realism. By recognizing such hierarchies, science gains a clearer sense of humility: it acknowledges not only what we can achieve, but also what it truly means to defy the universe’s immutable principles.
The first category, Class I, includes technologies that might seem fanciful but are already whispering from the edges of laboratory feasibility. I like to call them “century-scale impossibilities,” for they are the spark between imagination and prototypes. Force fields, for instance, have left the domain of fantasy to reappear as plasma shields and electromagnetic barriers. Invisibility, once a magician’s trick, is now a subject of optical physics and metamaterials. Even handheld energy weapons — phasers or ray guns — find embryonic echoes in experimental high-energy laser systems.
Each of these ideas rests on a firm physical principle, yet faces engineering obstacles. With sufficient progress in energy storage, nanotechnology, and quantum control, we may find that the tools of science fiction are merely technology waiting for patience.
