Among them are members of a secret society known as the Legendborn, descendants of King Arthur’s knights. To Bree, it’s unthinkable—North Carolina, centuries removed from Camelot, yet alive with magic disguised as campus tradition. But this encounter doesn’t just open her eyes; it stirs something sleeping in her own spirit. She begins to sense presence and memory that shouldn’t exist, fragments of visions and emotions that seem inherited, not imagined.

Grieving makes Bree fearless—or at least reckless enough to chase answers others dismiss. In these early chapters, I wanted to channel the electric pulse of arrival—the moment a young person realizes that the world still has secret dimensions waiting to be uncovered. Bree’s grief isolates her from those who understand her age, but it also connects her to a larger truth about humanity’s endless dance with myth. Her pain becomes fuel for a journey that asks not only what magic is, but who it truly belongs to.

When Bree enters the Order’s training and initiation, she experiences firsthand how legacy shapes privilege. The Legendborn guard humanity from Shadowborn—demonic entities that cross into our world—but they do so under a structure built on hereditary magic. Each member descends directly from a knight of the Round Table and draws power when their ancestral spirit reawakens through the cycle of descent. King Arthur’s spirit, they believe, will be reborn among them in one of his living heirs.

Through Nick, Bree learns the Order’s history: noble oaths, centuries-long lineage, and a mission rooted in valor. Yet beneath the surface, this world reflects the social hierarchies of the mortal one. For all its grandeur, the Order does not easily make room for outsiders—or for someone like Bree, a young Black woman who carries magic that doesn’t fit the Order’s carefully preserved bloodlines. The tension between inherited power and self-earned discovery becomes a recurring fire. During training sessions and trials, Bree notices that magic isn’t uniform; the Order’s power feels rigid, channeled through ancestral command, while the glimpses of energy she unwittingly produces seem fluid, unbounded by ritual.

These chapters reveal both admiration and critique: the Order is a monument to human devotion, yet it mirrors historical exclusion. Its oaths recall medieval hierarchy; its codes evoke centuries of silence around who gets counted as worthy. I made Bree’s infiltration of this world deliberate—a bold act of questioning. She doesn’t only search for clues about her mother’s death; she confronts the very definition of heritage itself. When her memories begin to fracture under the weight of magic, Bree’s emotional depth maps onto the story’s supernatural one. As she unearths fragments of her mother’s secret involvement with Rootcraft—a lineage of ancestral and spiritual magic distinct from the Order—she begins to sense that truth doesn’t always reside inside tradition. Sometimes it blooms outside it, in the spaces tradition forgot.
