The amygdala still reacts swiftly, leaving us “emotional”—uttering words or taking actions we soon regret. Understanding this mechanism does not mean avoiding emotions but learning to navigate them wisely. Reason and emotion are not enemies but partners in an intricate dance. When the prefrontal cortex can harmonize the impulses of the amygdala, we find the calm needed to make wise decisions under pressure.

Amygdala hijacks play out not only in families and workplaces but across societies, fueling violence and division. Recognizing this process helps us stay vigilant when emotions surge. By creating a brief pause—a single breath—we give the prefrontal cortex time to regain command. That split second can determine whether we become slaves to emotion or its masters.
