Key Chapters
For too long, society has convinced us that only certain people are born creative. I know because I grew up believing it myself. But the myth of talent is exactly that—a myth. When I look back on my career, I see that my success as a photographer didn’t come from innate skill; it came from showing up, experimenting, and failing over and over again until I got better. Creativity isn’t an accident of birth, it’s a skill that strengthens through practice, like a muscle.
Think of talent as potential energy—it only becomes power when you use it. When I first started taking photos, most of them were terrible. I didn’t have fancy gear or elite training; what I had was the willingness to keep going. Each day I picked up my camera, I learned something new—not only about light and composition but about persistence and trust. The act of creating, not the outcome, built my confidence.
When we cling to the myth of talent, we sabotage ourselves before we even begin. We tell ourselves we’re not artists, we’re not 'that kind of person.' But creativity doesn’t care about labels. It shows up wherever people choose to act with intention. The truth is that creativity rewards consistency, not natural advantage. What separates those who create from those who don’t isn’t talent—it’s the decision to start, to practice, and to keep going despite uncertainty.
Over the years, I needed a way to translate creativity from an abstract concept into something actionable. That’s why I developed the IDEA framework: Imagine, Design, Execute, and Amplify. It’s the foundation for every creative pursuit—simple enough to remember, yet deep enough to guide a lifetime of practice.
First, we Imagine: reconnecting with curiosity and envisioning what could be. This is where we dream freely and reconnect to the part of ourselves that still believes anything is possible. Then we Design: translating those abstract ideas into structures, systems, and routines that give them shape. Next, we Execute: stepping into the messy, uncertain process of creation, facing fear and imperfection head-on. Finally, we Amplify: sharing our work with others, building community, and inspiring the cycle to continue.
Creativity doesn’t exist in isolation—it thrives in motion. Each stage of the IDEA framework feeds the next. When you imagine, you need the discipline of design to bring your vision to life. When you execute, you gain the experience that fuels future imagination. Amplifying your work ensures it touches others, expanding both your creative world and theirs. Through this framework, creativity becomes not just something you do, but something you live.
