Change happens when acceptance lays the groundwork. Through practice, you’ll begin to pause before reacting, noticing the moment you are pulled by old habits of emotional avoidance or impulsivity. In that pause, you can choose differently — to breathe, to name what you feel, to use a DBT skill like “wise mind” rather than picking a fight or shutting down. Over time, this balance between acceptance and change becomes second nature. You find that your emotions still come and go, but you no longer drown in them.
