Key Chapters
I was born in 1924 in Plains, Georgia, a town that barely counted a thousand souls. My earliest memories are steeped in red clay, long summer days, and the hard but honest rhythm of farm work. Ours was a modest home—no electricity or running water in the early days—but rich in family love and in the moral lessons my parents instilled. My father was both stern and just; from him I learned the meaning of discipline, honesty, and perseverance. My mother, Miss Lillian as she was widely known, was a nurse whose compassion transcended racial barriers in a deeply segregated South. It was from her that I first felt the pull toward empathy and service.
Our community was close-knit. Black and white families worked side by side in the fields, even as Jim Crow laws enforced separation in every public sphere. I grew up aware of injustice, though I did not yet fully grasp its cruelty. Later in life, as I reflected on those years, I recognized how much my early environment shaped my dedication to equality and human dignity. Those roots, tangled as they were in both tradition and contradiction, became the soil from which my political and moral values grew.
Though poor in material richness, Plains provided something enduring: a belief that community mattered, that a measure of one’s life came from usefulness, and that integrity—to self and to others—was non-negotiable.
