Anxiety starts innocently. Something uncertain arises—a thought, an email, a bodily sensation—and the mind searches for relief. That search, driven by discomfort, is the very engine of habit formation. In my lab and clinical practice, I’ve seen how worry acts as a behavior within a reward-based learning system. When you worry, you feel temporarily in control. The momentary relief from uncertainty sends a signal of reward to your brain. Over time, it learns that worry is functional, even though it’s not. You end up reinforcing anxiety as if it were a survival mechanism.

It’s much like addiction. Using smoking as an analogy, a smoker lights a cigarette to soothe stress—not realizing that the nicotine relief is just reinforcing the pattern. Anxiety works similarly. Worry about the future briefly distracts from the discomfort of not knowing. The brain links the sequence—trigger (uncertainty), behavior (worry), reward (temporary relief)—and strengthens the association. We believe we’re solving problems, but in truth, we’re feeding the habit loop.

Understanding this loop is revolutionary. Once you see that anxiety is not who you are but what your brain is doing, compassion emerges naturally. Instead of blaming yourself, you begin to see the machinery. You can observe the trigger, identify the behavior, and notice the perceived reward. In that clarity, change becomes possible.

To unwind anxiety, you must first see the threads that create it. Triggers come in many shapes—external events like deadlines or social interactions, and internal sensations like a racing heart or intrusive thought. When I teach patients to identify triggers, I encourage them to practice awareness without judgment. The goal is not to stop triggers from appearing, but to notice them with curiosity, as if studying the habits of an old friend.

For example, one patient noticed that every meeting with her supervisor began with tightness in her chest. Rather than fight that feeling, she learned to pause and observe it as a trigger. Another realized that checking his phone for messages of reassurance was his habitual attempt to soothe uncertainty. Each recognition deepens insight into the habit loop. Awareness brings space. And that space is where freedom starts.
