Key Chapters

Fear, I’ve learned, is both a teacher and a companion. It’s the voice that tells us to stay safe, but also the one that whispers, “You’re not enough.” For much of my life, I wrestled with that whisper. Growing up on the South Side of Chicago, I worried whether I was smart enough, capable enough, good enough. Even as a First Lady, standing on the grandest stages, that old question would echo in my head. What helped me wasn’t trying to silence it—but learning to understand it.

Fear often disguises itself as logic. It keeps us from speaking up in meetings, from applying for new opportunities, from sharing our authentic selves. But fear can also be a signpost—it tells us that something matters. The trick is to acknowledge fear without letting it steer the wheel. When I spoke to young women who doubted themselves, I told them the truth: courage isn’t the absence of fear. It’s action in spite of it.

I found that by naming my fear—literally saying, “I am afraid of X”—I stripped it of its mystique. Talking about fear exposes it to the light, and light shrinks it. Whether it was the fear of public scrutiny or the anxiety of parenting, I faced it best when I allowed myself to be vulnerable. And vulnerability, despite what the world suggests, is a form of strength. Fear will never fully leave us, but through compassion and self-awareness, we learn to coexist with it—and walk forward anyway.

Whenever we face big challenges, our first instinct is often to search for grand solutions. Yet over the years, I’ve realized that progress rarely arrives in sweeping gestures. It begins with small, deliberate steps. When I transitioned from corporate law to public service, I didn’t leap blindly into the unknown; I experimented. I followed my interests in education and community work, one conversation, one volunteer project at a time. These modest steps built the foundation for bigger moves.

Starting small gives us momentum. It’s like lighting a single candle in a dark room. The glow may be faint at first, but it’s enough to see the next step. During the pandemic, when so many of us felt helpless, I returned to this principle. I focused on what was directly within reach—walking my dogs, calling a friend, tending to my garden. Those small acts weren’t about control; they were about grounding myself in the present moment.

The practice of starting small helps quiet the perfectionist inside us that demands instant results. It reminds us that we don’t need to have it all figured out. Whether you’re learning a new skill, rebuilding after loss, or redefining yourself in midlife, progress is built molecule by molecule. When you honor the small beginnings, you cultivate resilience—and you give yourself permission to grow at your own pace.
