When anthropologists first analyzed the microbiomes of modern hunter-gatherer tribes like the Hadza in Tanzania, they were astonished. These individuals harbored far more microbial diversity than those of us in industrial societies. Their guts reflected an unbroken lineage of cohabitation with the natural world—a harmony we lost as agriculture, antibiotics, refrigeration, and sterilization became defining features of life.

Each leap in human progress carried microbial consequences. Fire and cooking reduced our microbial exposure. Agriculture narrowed dietary variety. Through this historical lens, we can see that our modern epidemics of obesity, diabetes, anxiety, and immune dysfunction are not simply products of willpower or genetics—they are symptoms of ecological collapse within. Rebuilding what we’ve stripped away requires intentionality, patience, and a return to microbial diversity through fiber-rich, plant-focused diets and selective exposure to the natural world.
