In the modern world, however, the amygdala can’t differentiate between a predator and a critical email from your boss. Every minor frustration can become a coded message to prepare for battle.
Once the amygdala sends the distress signal, stress hormones flood the blood, heart rate spikes, and the neocortex—the rational, creative, decision-making part of the brain—essentially shuts down. Chronic stress locks people into this reactive loop. The brain’s wiring begins to favor amygdala dominance, strengthening pathways of fear, pessimism, and judgment. You start perceiving everything through the lens of risk and uncertainty, and your day is easily consumed by worry or anger. It’s no wonder that, biologically, the stressed brain becomes less efficient, less healthy, and much less happy.
