When the story begins, Rin is no hero basking in victory. She’s a survivor fighting demons both literal and psychological. The atrocities she committed during the Third Poppy War, driven by the fiery god Phoenix, have scorched her soul. Jiang, her mentor,—the only person who ever tried to temper her power with wisdom—is gone. What remains is a young woman haunted by guilt, addicted to opium, drifting through nightmares of the cities she burned.

I wrote these chapters to evoke the claustrophobic reality of post-war disillusionment. Rin’s pain isn’t abstract; it manifests in her inability to trust others, to trust herself, to discern whether she’s still mortal or just a vessel of divine fury. Her withdrawal from leadership, her reliance on the remnants of the Cike—her elite assassins—is a form of hiding. Yet even as she seeks oblivion, the world doesn’t allow her rest. Whispers of rebellion stir against the Empress, the same woman she blames for betraying Nikan and causing unimaginable suffering.

The personal and the political begin to intertwine: her quest for vengeance becomes the spark for another war. Rin’s private trauma mirrors the collective trauma of a nation ruined by constant conflict. The addiction to power, revenge, and divine voices is as much societal as it is personal. I wanted readers to feel that tension—to see war not as glory or tragedy alone, but as a spiritual rot that consumes both winner and loser alike.

It’s impossible to talk about Rin without talking about the Phoenix—the god who speaks in fire and rage. In the first book, the Phoenix empowered her to unleash unimaginable destruction; in this second, it becomes her tormentor. The god’s voice is still there, whispering promises of cleansing flames, reminding her that annihilation is easier than forgiveness. Rin clings to vengeance against Su Daji, the Empress, whose betrayal shattered her nation and spirit.

Her journey toward revenge leads the Cike, her band of surviving comrades, into a desperate assassination attempt. But divine power, politics, and cruelty converge to crush their plan. They fail and flee for their lives. This is the pivot where Rin begins to face the futility of righteous fury. Vengeance cannot rebuild what the Empress destroyed—it only perpetuates destruction under a new banner.

This dynamic between Rin and the Phoenix was meant to depict the thin line between justice and fanaticism. Rin wants freedom from divine influence yet relies on that power to survive. She’s a revolutionary driven by wrath, not clarity. And in that contradiction, she represents the cost of being a weapon molded by the gods: even victory leaves her hollow.

Through her failure, Rin begins to see that the world of Nikan isn’t shaped only by divine will, but by human ambition far more insidious.
