Key Chapters

When America’s first colleges were founded, they were built with a sense of mission. Think of Harvard, Yale, Princeton—institutions devoted to forming moral character and intellectual discipline. They trained ministers, civic leaders, and thinkers grounded in truth. But as we moved into the industrial age, efficiency began replacing virtue as the guiding value. By the mid-twentieth century, the federal government’s involvement in higher education—particularly through the GI Bill and later student loans—expanded access but also began encouraging a growth mentality. Colleges turned their mission into a business model.

The classical idea of education as the pursuit of truth gave way to credentialism. The goal wasn’t to form minds but to sell degrees. Bureaucracy bloomed; departments multiplied; and administrators began to outnumber professors. What began as centers for character formation became profit-maximizing institutions cloaked in moral rhetoric. My argument is that we replaced moral integrity with institutional survival.

It’s also crucial to recognize that ideological transformation accompanied bureaucratic growth. As Marxist and deconstructionist ideas gained ground in academia during the 1960s, universities became ideological incubators. They justified their moral emptiness by claiming to be agents of social change. Suddenly, every traditional concept—truth, objectivity, merit—was seen as political. The professor’s pulpit became a platform for activism. And America’s young people, instead of learning how to think, were taught what to think.

If there’s one number that tells the story of higher education’s corruption, it’s 1.7 trillion—that’s how much student debt Americans now carry. Behind every dollar of that sum lies a young person’s dream deferred, a family burdened, and a future constrained. The scam operates like this: colleges raise tuition every year, invest in palatial buildings, and create layers of administrative positions with six-figure salaries. Then they tell eighteen-year-olds that borrowing money is a normal cost of entry to prosperity.

In my research and conversations, I discovered that tuition inflation far outpaces both wages and cost of living. This isn’t because the quality of education improved. It’s because federal loan guarantees make universities immune to market discipline. Colleges can charge what they wish, knowing government-backed loans will keep students coming. The result is a self-perpetuating debt machine.

I see this not as a defect but as the design of the modern university. The goal is dependency—financially and spiritually. Students begin adulthood in bondage to debt, unable to take entrepreneurial risks or start families early. That economic leash ensures compliance. It’s why I call it the College Scam: the system that pretends to empower actually enslaves.

Parents must ask themselves: what are we paying for? A degree that opens doors or one that locks you into lifelong repayment while offering no moral compass or practical skills? I believe the answer is clear.
