Key Chapters
When my husband died, I, Halla, believed my own life had no further meaning. His relatives had treated me as little more than furniture, and though I’d worked faithfully, all I received was emptiness—and, strangely, a sword. A simple fate, I thought: fade quietly and take control of my exit. But fate, of course, mocks human plans. As I tried to surrender to despair, the sword awakened, exploding into light and fury, and from it emerged a man—Sarkis. Built like the warriors of old, gruff in bearing and bound by oaths carved into ancient magic, he was as baffled by my presence as I was by his sudden re-entry into the world.
This meeting was no fairy-tale encounter. Sarkis was not a charming rescuer but a perplexed, stubborn soul trapped in a blade for centuries. Fear, embarrassment, and wit became our first shared language. Yet from that awkward beginning sprouted an uneasy truce. I had inheritance to claim, he had a mysterious curse to endure, and neither of us could navigate these absurdities alone.
The road to Archenhold began beneath a sky that seemed too wide for my grief. Traveling with a man who could vanish back into a sword on command gave absurdity new meaning. But as we walked and talked, something inside me shifted. My life had been tightly walled by obedience and silence; now, alongside this immortal swordsman, I began to remember how to speak my mind—and even joke again. For Sarkis, it was different. My fearlessness in small things—campfire cooking, blunt honesty—reminded him of everything he had lost when time passed him by. In our fragile partnership, laughter returned as a form of survival.
Like all great journeys, ours did not unfold smoothly—or sensibly. The countryside was thick with bandits and magical nuisances, some dangerous, others simply ridiculous. Sarkis, always vigilant, responded to threats with the instincts of a professional soldier. I, not yet accustomed to the idea of being anyone’s quest partner, watched and learned. Each encounter revealed more of who he had been before his imprisonment: a man forged by honor, capable of anger, patience, and loyalty in equal measure. But I was changing, too. Each new danger forced me to act rather than wait, to raise my voice instead of stepping aside. I began to see that my courage did not need to look like swordsmanship—it could sound like persistence.
Somewhere along the road, we met Zale, a priest of the Rat God. It is impossible to adequately describe the absurd comfort of his presence. Zale treated our impossible situation as simply another item on the world’s long list of divine mishaps. He was both comic relief and moral compass, reminding us that faith can coexist with reason, and that compassion often wears the face of chaos. His practicality contrasted with Sarkis’s grim devotion and my fumbling attempts at confidence. Together we created an odd but harmonious triangle, walking through a world where every tavern hid whispers of bureaucracy, and every city gate required documents nobody understood.
In Archenhold, the heart of civilization, our adventure took a different shape. Instead of monsters and robbers, we encountered clerks and lawyers—creatures no less formidable. I discovered that navigating inheritance law was more perilous than facing a troll. Yet it was in the midst of red tape and absurdity that our relationship began to deepen. Where once I saw Sarkis merely as protector and curse-bearer, I now saw gentleness behind the warrior’s temper, and his quiet regard became my strength. Humor kept us sane, love made the madness bearable, and together, we began to believe in a future shaped not by fate, but by choice.
