Key Chapters

All genuine faith begins with understanding divine love. Before we can respond to God, we must first see that He has already reached out to us. The universe itself, from the first blade of grass to the pulse of a human heart, tells the story of a Creator whose nature is love. But it is in Jesus that this love shines most clearly. In His compassion toward the suffering, in His forgiveness toward the undeserving, in His willingness to bear sin’s consequences upon the cross — God revealed not condemnation but yearning mercy.

Many suppose that God’s favor must be earned by moral performance, but such thinking blinds us to the very nature of grace. It was while we were yet sinners that Christ died for us. The cross is heaven’s pledge that God’s heart is forever inclined toward the fallen. Every act of kindness, every ray of truth, every prompting toward goodness originates from that infinite love seeking to restore His children. When I contemplate that love, I see that humanity’s highest calling is not fear of punishment but surrender to affection. Only love awakens love.

So the first step toward Christ is not self-improvement but trust — believing that, despite unworthiness, we are deeply cherished. Once that conviction dawns on the soul, obligation turns to gratitude, and duty becomes delight. The human heart begins to respond, whispering, 'If God so loved me, how can I withhold myself from Him?' Thus the journey always begins, not with the sinner climbing upward, but with God bending low in compassion.

After glimpsing the love of God, the soul becomes conscious of a deep dissonance within — the realization that we have been living apart from the very Source of life. No human being can, by self-effort, cleanse this sense of moral disorder. We may educate, discipline, or reform our outward habits, but sin is not a surface dust to be brushed away; it is a disease of the will, a rebellion of the heart.

Humanity’s need of Christ is total because the separation from God is total. The moral law of heaven, written upon every conscience, condemns self-centeredness no matter how refined. Christ alone bridges this gulf. In His life, He demonstrated perfect obedience; in His death, He bore the weight of our guilt. By uniting His divinity with our humanity, He brought divine strength within the reach of all who believe.

When I write of 'the sinner’s need,' I write not as an observer but as one who herself has felt that need. No condemnation is heavier than the heart’s own realization of sin. Yet Christ does not point an accusing finger; He extends a healing hand. To understand this is to see that repentance is not despair but hope, not self-hatred but the moment when the lost child hears the Father calling, 'Come home.'
