Key Chapters

My earliest memories are saturated with faith. In our Pakistani-American household, Islam was more than a religion—it was our breath, our rhythm, the structure of every day. I remember waking up before dawn to the call to prayer and watching my father’s devotion with awe. He had served in the U.S. Navy but never let the secular world dull his reverence for Allah. My mother, gentle and steadfast, embodied compassion and holiness. She taught me to respect God with every word I spoke and every action I took.

We were part of the Ahmadiyya sect of Islam, which emphasized peace, intellectual rigor, and devotion. From a young age, I memorized passages of the Qur’an and learned to recite Arabic with precision. Our family discussions revolved around theology, morality, and honor. God was not distant to us; He was woven into our identity.

But within that devotion lies a key to understanding my journey: the stronger your conviction, the deeper your struggle when doubt appears. I was raised to defend Islam with reason and eloquence. By the time I reached adolescence, I relished public debates with Christians, confident that no faith could withstand Muslim critique. In those formative days, I had no inkling that my zeal to defend truth would one day lead me to question everything I held dear.

Growing up in the West, Christianity surrounded me. Churches towered over our neighborhoods, and my classmates often wore crosses or celebrated Christmas. Yet to me, Christianity seemed irrational. Muslims knew Jesus as Isa, a revered prophet, but not divine. I perceived Christian doctrine—especially the Trinity and the crucifixion—as invitations to illogic. Why would God need to suffer? Why would He divide Himself into three?

These questions weren’t born from mere prejudice. They arose from conviction that Islam possessed unity and clarity while Christianity represented confusion. I often challenged Christians to defend their faith, expecting weak answers, and usually, I received them. But deep behind my confidence lurked curiosity. If millions believed Jesus was God, perhaps there was something worth understanding more accurately.

Still, for much of my youth, Christianity remained a caricature in my mind—a religion of cultural inheritance, not of truth. That perception would dramatically change when a single friendship invited me to revisit everything I had assumed.
