Key Chapters
My story begins amid the sterile precision of the financial world in New York, a setting driven by profit, calculation, and abstraction. I had thrived in that environment—until, gradually, the metrics lost meaning. Numbers seemed detached from life itself. Seeking reconnection, I took a sabbatical and found myself volunteering at a dairy farm near Toronto. I expected a bucolic landscape of sunlit meadows and contented cows. The place looked charming from the outside, but when I entered the barns, the atmosphere shifted. The cows stood in concrete pens, their movements restricted, their bodies engineered for relentless production. I witnessed mastitis infections, artificial inseminations, and a mechanized rhythm that reduced living beings to commodities.
The experience shocked me. The farmers were not villains—they were kind, hardworking people—but entrenched in an economic system that demanded maximum efficiency. Their survival depended on output, not compassion. For the first time, I saw how the invisible logic of markets could shape ethical realities on the ground. That encounter triggered my determination to see beyond Canada’s borders—to trace the global system that shapes every glass of milk.
From dairy barns, I moved to poultry sheds. I visited egg farms that glistened with technology but stank of ammonia and despair. Chickens lived crammed together, unable to spread their wings, their beaks clipped to prevent pecking—symptoms not of cruelty by design but of efficiency gone astray. The contrast between bright packaging labeled 'farm fresh' and the reality of endless cages was staggering.
In hatcheries, I witnessed the sorting of male chicks from females—females destined for egg laying, males discarded as waste. Each scene forced me to confront the moral arithmetic hidden inside modern food production. The more I observed, the clearer it became that a model built on standardization and scale inevitably erases individuality.
Yet amid the bleakness, I also met small-scale poultry farmers who tried to do right. They allowed chickens access to pasture, created space and light, and accepted lower yields for higher welfare. Their existence proved that alternatives were not only possible but already quietly thriving, even if marginalized by the industrial juggernaut.
