Key Chapters

I grew up in Orange, California, but it was Kansas that shaped the man I became. My parents taught me that hard work and humility always go hand in hand. In Wichita, the air smelled of aviation fuel and ambition—people built things there, tangible things. When I arrived at West Point, I carried those values with me. The Academy sharpened my discipline, taught me to lead with integrity, and gave me a love of country that transcended politics. In the 2nd Cavalry Regiment on the East German border, I saw firsthand what freedom meant—and what its absence looked like. Serving as an Army officer forged in me the belief that America’s security depends not just on military might, but on moral conviction.

After leaving active duty, I entered Harvard Law School and later built a manufacturing business in Wichita. Running Thayer Aerospace taught me lessons no textbook could: how to make payroll, how to rely on a team, and how to shoulder responsibility for other people’s livelihoods. That experience grounded my later political philosophy. When I was elected to Congress in 2010, I carried the mindset of a builder, not a career politician. Washington, I quickly learned, runs on personalities and alliances. But above that, it runs on conviction—or should. The deeper I got, the more convinced I became that America needed leaders who remembered where they came from.

In those early congressional years, I began to see how intelligence, diplomacy, and defense intersected. I served on committees that introduced me to the threats facing our nation: Iran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons, China’s growing assertiveness, and the persistent menace of terrorism. But the biggest threat I saw was apathy—a willingness by too many to accept the slow erosion of America’s strength. I determined that wherever I served, I would resist that decay. That decision would later guide every action I took as CIA Director and Secretary of State.

When President Trump asked me to lead the CIA in 2017, I knew the Agency was in need of rebuilding—not in capability, but in spirit. Years of political leaks and scandals had bruised morale. My mission was to restore confidence, both inside the agency and between the intelligence community and the White House. The first thing I did was walk the halls, shake hands, and look people in the eye. I told them straight: politics stops at the CIA’s door. We had to operate from fact, not bias. Intelligence, after all, is only valuable if it’s honest.

We focused on three priorities: improving the Agency’s human intelligence networks, boosting our cyber capabilities, and strengthening counterterrorism efforts. But people were our greatest asset. I wanted every officer to know their work mattered to America’s safety. I often said: We steal secrets to protect our nation—not for curiosity, but for freedom. That clarity brought focus back to the Agency. Our teams delivered precise, actionable intelligence that shaped key foreign policy decisions, from countering ISIS to monitoring North Korea and Iran.

Working with President Trump meant navigating an unconventional leadership style, but what mattered most was outcomes. When we eliminated high-value terrorist targets or prevented attacks, those victories belonged to the men and women in the field. The toughest challenge came from internal distrust in Washington. But I told my officers: the motto remains silence, not spectacle. We serve unseen, but our impact endures. By the time I left the CIA, the Agency was stronger, more agile, and better aligned to face the threats of a rapidly changing world.
