My story begins in Chennai, where I was born into a conservative Tamil family that prized education and integrity above all else. The home I grew up in was filled with discipline and warmth, where ambitions were measured not by wealth but by contribution. My mother encouraged lively debates at the dinner table, challenging my sister and me to think, to imagine ourselves as leaders, even if society’s expectations seemed to point us toward domesticity. This constant engagement taught me that having an opinion, even as a young girl, was not arrogance—it was responsibility.

Education became the first bridge between my small world and the larger horizon I sought. At Holy Angels and later at Madras Christian College, I was introduced to teamwork, leadership, and the empowerment that came through knowledge. At a time when few girls in India pursued business careers, these institutions gave me the space to test my aspirations. I learned that leadership starts in the courage to speak and to strive, even when the environment thinks you shouldn’t.

The Chennai years gave me a profound understanding of rootedness. Success cannot stand without values. My family taught me humility and service; my culture taught me respect and resilience. Leaving Chennai to attend the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta was an awakening. I encountered a melting pot of intellect and competition, a stage where theory met drive. The IIM years challenged me to think strategically and analytically, preparing me for the global conversation that awaited. Yet the most powerful lesson I learned was that merit could coexist with mentorship. My professors demanded excellence but also nurtured dreams—fueling my belief that education is not merely transactional but transformational.

When I left India for Yale School of Management, the world opened in unexpected ways. Yale was not just a new geographical setting; it was a new mental landscape. There, I was confronted by cultural differences that made me question who I was and how I could belong. I was an Indian woman in a sea of western peers, trying to decode idioms, customs, and confidence. Money was scarce, homesickness was real, but curiosity kept me anchored. I worked as a receptionist to make ends meet, and every late-night study session taught me adaptability and endurance.

At Yale I grasped the power of inclusive capitalism—the idea that corporations can serve society beyond profit. That concept resonated deeply because it aligned with everything my upbringing instilled. Education abroad didn’t erase my origins; it expanded them.
