Key Chapters

I was born Reginald Kenneth Dwight in Pinner, Middlesex — not exactly the birthplace of rock and roll. My parents loved music, but not in the same way I did. My mum adored pop and kept the radio on constantly, while my dad preferred the discipline of military brass bands and classical records. He wanted precision; I wanted passion. From the beginning, I was caught between the two.

When I first sat at the piano at home — an old upright, slightly out of tune — I felt something click. I didn’t know then that the piano would become my passport out of ordinary life. At school I was quiet and often bullied, but music gave me a secret identity, a private world where my hands could express everything I was too shy to say. My grandmother realized how much it meant to me and arranged for lessons. That’s where I learned not just technique but devotion: how to listen, how to lose myself in the sound, and how to chase perfection note by note.

Still, for all that practice and promise, no one could have guessed that this shy little boy would one day strut across stages in feathered capes and rhinestones. Back then, I just wanted to belong. And in some way, every step of my journey — from the first chord I played to the first song I wrote — was an attempt to find connection and love in a world that didn’t seem to see me.

By my teens, I’d formed a band called Bluesology. We played pubs and clubs, backing visiting American R&B singers and scraping together a few quid. It was glamorous only if you liked grueling gigs and second-hand vans that constantly broke down. Still, those years were essential. They taught me how to perform, how to read a crowd, and how to survive the brutal unpredictability of the business.

But I was restless. Being a sideman didn’t suit me; I wanted to write my own music, to say something that belonged to me. That’s when fate intervened in the shape of a manila envelope filled with lyrics by someone named Bernie Taupin. The moment I read his words, a spark ignited. I started setting his lyrics to music almost immediately. It was as if we’d known each other for years. That partnership became the backbone of my career — the chemistry was instantaneous, and together we built songs that felt both intimate and universal.

At some point, Reginald Dwight no longer felt like the right name for the person I was becoming. So I borrowed ‘Elton’ from a bandmate in Bluesology and ‘John’ from Long John Baldry, another musician I admired. Suddenly, Elton John existed — a persona that allowed me to express the colors and flamboyance I’d hidden for so long. It was a reinvention that would change everything.
