Key Chapters

The journey begins by naming our true condition: most of us live from a fragmented consciousness, identified primarily with thought, emotion, and sensation. These are real aspects of our human functioning, yet they are not the whole of who we are. Consciousness itself is not a byproduct of the body; it is a reflection of the divine light within us. What we call the 'ego' is a necessary tool for navigating the temporal world, yet it becomes a cage when we mistake it for the totality of our being.

In the Sufi view, the human being is a microcosm containing all levels of existence. Deep within lies the ruh, the spirit or divine breath, our most essential self. It is timeless, spacious, and naturally radiant, but it becomes obscured by veils—habits of thought, emotional reactivity, and social conditioning. Spiritual practice is therefore less about adding something new and more about removing the veils that prevent us from knowing what is already true.

I often tell students that awareness of the ego is not an act of condemnation but of love. We observe our inner patterns with compassion, so that awareness itself begins to transform them. Each moment of presence strengthens our connection to the essential self. Over time, this inner witness stabilizes, creating a continuity of consciousness that can hold the drama of life without being consumed by it. In that spaciousness, the divine qualities—patience, mercy, generosity—begin to unfold naturally. We become, as the Sufis say, mirrors reflecting the attributes of the Beloved.

Much of what is today called mindfulness points to an essential truth that the Sufis have cultivated for centuries. The Arabic term muraqaba, often translated as 'watchfulness,' refers to a state of inner attentiveness sustained by love. It is not a cold observation of phenomena but a warm, reverent awareness rooted in remembrance (dhikr) of the Divine Presence.

When we practice this mindful awareness, we are not only calming the mind—we are creating a space where the heart can perceive. The heart, in Sufi understanding, is the organ of spiritual perception. It sees reality from a higher vantage. Through continual remembrance, the heart begins to attune itself to the rhythm of divine life that underlies all forms.

To live mindfully in the Sufi way is to bring reverence into ordinary moments: to feel the aliveness of washing one’s hands, to sense divine generosity in the food we prepare, to listen deeply to another human being without agenda. Each act becomes an opportunity to remember. I often emphasize that mindfulness is not merely a technique; it is a relationship—with one’s own essence, with life, and ultimately with God. The more this awareness deepens, the more seamlessly our outer actions align with inner being. Mindfulness and divine remembrance converge, transforming the mundane into the sacred.
