Key Chapters
If you ask ten people what prayer is, you may receive ten different answers: a request for help, a quiet meditation, a way to feel better, a moment of silence, or a mysterious experience of transcendence. I begin by untangling these partial truths, because prayer has often been misunderstood. In Christian faith, prayer is first and foremost a relationship. It is our living, breathing engagement with God—a conversation that involves both speaking and listening, both longing and being loved. Prayer is not magic. It is not about manipulating outcomes or appeasing divine will. It is about placing yourself, honestly and vulnerably, in the presence of God.
Sometimes prayer is restful, sometimes confusing. There are times when words flow, and times when silence alone feels authentic. The definition of prayer must be large enough to include all of these textures because God meets us not in one fixed way but through many shapes of communication. Throughout my Jesuit formation, I learned that the moment you try to rigidly define how prayer 'should' work, you close yourself off from the ways God actually desires to reach you. So instead of control, prayer invites openness. Rather than a task to be accomplished, it becomes a way of being in love.
Why do we pray? The reasons are as diverse as our lives. Some people approach God in desperation; others out of gratitude. Some because they are searching for meaning; others simply to express love. I’ve encountered people who began praying only when something was lost—only to discover, in that ache of absence, that God had been present all along. Our motivations are rarely pure, but that does not make them invalid. God meets us in our desires, however mixed they may be. To pray out of fear or longing can still deepen our faith because prayer always leads us toward greater honesty.
Over time, prayer can evolve from being primarily about requests to being primarily about relationship. Gratitude often leads this transformation. When we pause to recognize blessing—the laughter of a friend, the beauty of creation, the breath that sustains us—we begin to see that prayer is not something we enter and exit, but a continuous exchange echoing through daily life. True prayer expands our perception: we start to find God not only in the rarefied spaces of worship but in the ordinary fabric of existence.
