Influence doesn’t begin with what we say—it begins with how people think. At the heart of every persuasive moment is the psychology of decision-making. Human beings are rarely rational actors, despite what we’d like to believe. Much of our daily behavior is steered by emotions, instincts, and unseen biases. In my research and teaching, I’ve witnessed how these biases shape our choices—from subtle cues of social proof, reciprocity, and scarcity, to deeply rooted desires for belonging and autonomy.
Understanding this means embracing humility. You’re not influencing logical machines. You’re connecting with people who want to feel safe, appreciated, and free. Behavioral economics helps explain why information alone rarely changes minds. Facts compete with feelings, and the latter usually wins. When I talk about influencing ethically, I remind my students you can’t bulldoze someone’s emotions with logic—you have to work with those emotions. Persuasion becomes powerful when it’s aligned with someone’s intrinsic motivations rather than imposed externally.
Much of influence happens subconsciously. The tone of your voice, your posture, even the rhythm of your words can tip decisions one way or another. Yet the most reliable tactic isn’t manipulation—it’s clarity. When you express what you want with transparency and empathy, you lower defenses and allow trust to grow. This is why influence science is so liberating: it gives us permission to communicate openly, to care about both outcomes and relationships. Once you understand how we all navigate the world through mental shortcuts and social signals, you can use that knowledge to guide—not exploit—others toward better choices.
Picture a person torn between impulse and deliberation. Inside each of us, there are two powerful systems at work: the Gator and the Judge. The Gator represents our intuitive, automatic, emotional brain—it acts fast, responds to threat, and seeks ease. The Judge is our rational side—slow, deliberate, and analytical. Every interaction you have, whether with yourself or others, dances between these two systems.
In influence, most communication theories emphasize speaking to the Judge—providing information, arguments, and evidence. But the truth is, the Gator runs the show most of the time. It’s like an alligator resting beneath the surface, reactive and watchful. If you try to reason with the Gator too early, it snaps. If you connect with it first—through warmth, safety, and trust—it relaxes and becomes receptive. The key is to make the Gator feel good before inviting the Judge to think.
When you understand this dynamic, your conversations transform. You stop overexplaining and start empathizing. Instead of bombarding someone with logic, you win their emotional permission to proceed. Speaking to the Gator means using stories, tone, and presence to reach the intuitive level. The Judge can process logic later, once the emotional foundation is set.
This framework helps us decode the mystery behind why smart people make irrational decisions. When fear or ego drive the Gator, even a perfectly reasoned argument will fail. But when the Gator feels respected and safe, persuasion becomes effortless. Recognizing both the Gator and the Judge within yourself helps you handle conflicts more gracefully and connect more deeply with others.
