If your people aren’t following you voluntarily, the relationship is transactional—not transformational.

But Level 1 is not a bad place—it’s simply the beginning. It establishes you in a framework where you have the chance to earn trust. Leadership always starts with position because the role gives you access. From here, the real task begins: to move beyond authority and gain permission. The challenge is to recognize that a title doesn’t make you a leader; character and competence do. Those are earned through trust, consistency, and care.

To progress, spend your energy not on the privileges the position gives you, but on the responsibilities it places upon you. Ask yourself: Have I earned the right to lead these people? Leadership is always bestowed by the followers. Without their willingness, the title means little. When you treat your position as an opportunity to serve rather than a platform to control, you start to build the foundation for real influence.

At Level 2, everything changes. You’ve moved beyond authority; you’ve earned the right to be followed. People now respond because they want to. It’s no longer about your job description—it’s about trust. This shift marks the heart of effective leadership because influence, at its essence, grows only in the soil of relationships.

Building relationships takes intentionality. It begins with listening—not just hearing words, but understanding hopes, fears, and motivations. When people feel known and valued, they give you permission to lead them. That’s the difference between positional and relational leadership. At Level 1, followers exist because of policy; at Level 2, they engage because of connection.

As I often emphasize, leadership is a daily choice. You choose to invest in people not because it’s efficient, but because it’s essential. The strongest teams I’ve ever seen are built on mutual respect and authentic care. The moment people believe you see them as more than a means to achieve goals, they begin to trust your intentions. Trust is the currency of leadership—it buys credibility, cooperation, and loyalty.

Yet, Level 2 has its own challenges. Relationships can be fragile. A leader must balance warmth with accountability, empathy with expectations. If you focus too much on being liked, you risk losing the clarity needed for progress. But when you show that respect and responsibility can coexist, people follow wholeheartedly.

Relationships take time. They demand humility and genuine interest. But once people give you permission to lead, you set the stage for everything that follows. Influence gained through relationship is inherently stable—it withstands pressure and builds unity. That’s the power of Level 2. It transforms authority into partnership, and commands into collaboration.
