Key Chapters

It began with fire. Aegon Targaryen, the first of his name, descended upon the shores of Westeros with his sister-wives, Visenya and Rhaenys, astride dragons whose wings cast shadows over the fields of the Reach and the rivers of the Trident. Before Aegon, the realm was fractured—seven crowns, seven laws, seven different ambitions held by lords who bowed to no common ruler. Aegon’s genius lay not only in conquest, but in vision. He sought not vengeance nor plunder, but unity.

The flames of Balerion, the Black Dread, decided where diplomacy could not. Harrenhal’s indestructible towers melted to ruin under dragonfire, and Harren the Black learned that stone is no shield against flame. Yet other lords bent the knee willingly, choosing fealty over their people’s annihilation. Thus began the weaving of a single realm under one crown—the Iron Throne, a monstrous seat forged from the swords of Aegon’s vanquished foes, a warning and a lesson that peace is bought with fire and blood.

I have often pondered Aegon’s motives. Some say he dreamed of the Doom that would come again. Others that he merely sought power. The truth, as ever, lies between. Aegon’s reign built the foundation of Westeros: a kingdom bound by allegiance to the throne rather than merely to land or house. His queens aided in the work—Visenya, sharp as Dark Sister, enforced order through fear; Rhaenys, radiant and gentle, brought grace and mercy. Together they ruled as dragon and dove, and under them, the Seven Kingdoms learned, however reluctantly, the meaning of One Realm.

When Aegon died, the dragons wept, or so the singers say. But no kingdom stays still when the conqueror’s hand is gone. Aenys I, his son, inherited his father’s crown and his mother Rhaenys’s gentleness. Where Aegon had commanded, Aenys persuaded; where his father’s voice silenced throngs, Aenys’s words invited debate. It was his tragedy that the realm was not yet ready for peace. Rebellion sprang like weeds—from Dorne, from the Faith, from lords who saw weakness where once they feared might.

The Seven’s prelates rose in fury against Targaryen polygamy and dragonlords’ heresies. As Faith Militant insurgencies shook the realm, Aenys hesitated, and hesitation proved fatal. His brother Maegor seized the moment—and the throne. Maegor’s reign was shadow itself, built upon blood, iron spikes, and the shrieks of the dying. He earned the name the Cruel not by songs but by deeds: the construction of the Red Keep’s secret dungeons, the crucifixion of dissenters, the annihilation of the Faith’s armies.

And yet, in darkest reigns, one finds the shape of the future. Maegor’s brutality broke the militant orders and made way, however violently, for royal supremacy over church and noble alike. When at last he died—alone upon the Iron Throne, slain by his own madness or perhaps the throne’s jagged edges—it seemed as if the blood of Aegon’s vision had withered. But history, ever patient, was waiting for a healer to mend what rage had torn apart.
