My first ultramarathons were humbling. I entered them with youthful pride and a sense that I could muscle through anything. I was wrong. The distances—50 miles, 100 miles—break you down to your core. You face dehydration, cramping, hallucinations, sheer exhaustion. Yet, paradoxically, it’s within that breaking that you discover resilience.
When I first encountered the Western States 100, I was intimidated. The idea of running from Squaw Valley to Auburn, across mountain passes, snowfields, and blazing canyons, felt almost impossible. But that impossibility called to me. I trained, studied, failed, learned. And when I finally stood on that starting line, I had only one goal: to finish. But something changed that day. Every climb, every descent, every ache in my legs became a meditation. I realized that the true test wasn’t just surviving the race—it was learning who I was when there was no one else to rely on.
The breakthrough came when I stopped racing the distance and started respecting it. My victories at Western States didn’t come because I was faster than others—they came because I learned how to endure. I learned patience, how to manage my energy, how to listen deeply to the signals of my body. Endurance became less about dominance and more about surrender: to the course, to the moment, to the run itself.
