Key Chapters

When I speak of the soul, I am referring to a dimension of life different from the spirit—the soul is earthy, emotional, imaginative. It is where our passions, desires, and vulnerabilities reside. In modern life, we often confuse spirituality with enlightenment or transcendence, as if our task were to rise above the messy human world. But the soul calls us downward—into the richness of feelings, into the stories that define our humanity.

The soul is nourished by images and myths. These timeless stories provide mirrors through which we recognize ourselves. The myth of Eros and Psyche, for instance, teaches that love and the soul must journey through trials to unite. Such myths remind us that depth is attained not when we escape difficulty, but when we enter it imaginatively.

Caring for the soul means attending to this realm of imagination and desire. It’s a practice grounded in acceptance of imperfection. Every emotion, even those we label negative, belongs to the ecology of the soul. When we ignore jealousy or anger, we deprive the soul of its voice. When we interpret our boredom as failure rather than invitation, we lose an opportunity to explore meaning. The soul’s needs are simple but profound: space for expression, time for reflection, and engagement with beauty and story.

Our world rarely provides these. We live in a culture of haste and efficiency, where feelings are symptoms to be corrected, and where myth is replaced by literalism. My plea is to reclaim the poetic life—to listen for the symbolic dimension hidden within events. There, in the play of image and emotion, the soul finds its home and we rediscover depth and sacredness in even the most ordinary experience.

Many people seek healing as though the psyche were a machine that occasionally breaks down. But in my view, symptoms are not errors—they are messages from the soul. Depression, anxiety, or compulsion are not indicators of something malfunctioning; they are communications about imbalance, neglect, or an unlived aspect of the self demanding attention.

Imagine sadness not as illness but as an invitation to slow down, to feel life more deeply. In therapy, I have often found that when we treat symptoms as holy visitations rather than enemies, transformation begins. The soul uses discomfort to redirect our attention. A man who feels constant dissatisfaction with his career may not need a new job; he may need to rediscover meaning or ritual in his daily efforts. A woman who battles compulsive perfectionism may be seeking the lost experience of beauty and spontaneous play.

To care for the soul, we must abandon the modern myth of permanent wellness. We must restore respect for vulnerability and mood. Melancholy is not opposed to joy but part of its texture. Every feeling is a thread in the tapestry of our existence. When we listen imaginatively to symptoms, they reveal the stories our soul is trying to tell.

This shift from cure to care is radical because it requires patience and reverence for mystery. The soul will not be rushed or analyzed into submission. It asks to be heard through symbol, dream, art, and reflection. In welcoming the symptom, we welcome the soul’s presence itself.
