But small cracks started to appear. Epicurus spoke of atoms swerving randomly in motion—perhaps a faint echo of chance. Yet such ideas remained philosophical curiosities until the Renaissance. To move beyond superstition, humankind needed mathematics, and the ambition to measure the uncertain.

The Renaissance brought audacity—the willingness to question the gods. At gambling tables, in games of dice and cards, thinkers found themselves intrigued by patterns hidden in chance. Gerolamo Cardano, a physician, mathematician, and compulsive gambler, became one of the first to systematize probability. He realized that uncertainty could be measured if one counted all possible outcomes logically.

Cardano’s work laid seeds that Pascal and Fermat later nurtured. Their famous correspondence solved the puzzle of the "problem of points"—how to fairly divide winnings in an unfinished game. From their analysis emerged the first coherent framework of probability. It was a radical idea: the future could be quantified, not divined.

These developments marked a turning point in human thought. Chance ceased to be mystical and became mathematical. By turning games into models of uncertainty, these scholars gave to humanity a new lens to view risk—not as fate but as something we could understand and even manage.
