According to this view, everything that exists—including mind and emotion—arises from material interactions. The brain, we were told, produces consciousness much as the liver produces bile. For years I accepted this assumption because it worked so well in constructing technology. Yet as I delved deeper into both science and self-reflection, I encountered paradoxes that no mechanistic theory could explain. How could purely physical processes generate the vividness of subjective experience—the taste of an apple, the feeling of love, the intuition of truth? Materialism could describe the structure of matter but not the presence of awareness observing it. I began to see that the central error of materialism lies in its reductionism. By separating observer from observed, object from subject, it amputates the very aspect that makes knowledge possible: consciousness itself. When we claim reality consists only of objective phenomena, we forget that every observation presupposes a conscious observer. Materialism thus becomes a self-defeating position. This realization did not come easily; it struck at the foundations of everything I had been taught. But once seen, it could not be unseen. The notion that we can understand consciousness through computation is like trying to hear a symphony by analyzing the ink on the sheet music. Physics and biology can reveal the patterns of life, but they can never grasp the first-person essence that experiences those patterns.

When I turned from matter to mind, I discovered a mystery far vaster than any scientific puzzle: what is consciousness itself? I had long believed it to be a product of brain activity, a kind of emergent illusion. But my own experience told a different story. Consciousness was not an artifact; it was the immediate fact of my being. It preceded every perception, every thought, every experiment. From the deepest stillness of awareness arises all knowing and doing. If we wish truly to understand consciousness, we must begin from its own nature, not attempt to derive it from what it already makes possible. In this light, consciousness is not a by-product of neural computation but a fundamental aspect of reality—like space, time, or energy, yet deeper still. It cannot be reduced to bits or logic, because computation operates only within it. Every machine and every model depends on the field of awareness in which it appears. I came to see that consciousness behaves more like a creative field than like a processing unit. It can focus, feel, and intuit; it can choose and create meaning. From this perspective, intelligence is only one expression of consciousness, not its source. To believe that machines could ever become truly conscious is to mistake symbolic manipulation for lived experience. A computer can imitate intelligence but never presence.
