Key Chapters
When I began in the 1960s, psychedelics like LSD and psilocybin were still legal tools used by academics, therapists, and spiritual explorers. The early researchers—scientists such as Humphry Osmond, Stanislav Grof, and Timothy Leary—believed they had uncovered a profound key to understanding human consciousness. Within just a few years, those same substances became feared, politicized, and cast into illegality. For decades, meaningful research was halted.
Yet throughout that time, a quiet current of study continued. Some researchers worked discreetly; others simply documented experiences, waiting for society to catch up. That moment of catching up is happening now. In universities across the world, rigorous studies with psilocybin, MDMA, and LSD are documenting their therapeutic potential for depression, PTSD, anxiety, and existential distress in the terminally ill. We are entering what many call the 'psychedelic renaissance'—only this time, guided by ethics, science, and humility rather than cultural rebellion.
In recounting this history, I want readers to understand both the promise and the cautionary lessons of our past. When psychedelics were treated as miracles or instruments of instant enlightenment, the social backlash was fierce. The true value of these substances lies not in spectacle, but in subtle transformation. Used responsibly, they can offer a context in which the boundaries of self dissolve, creativity blossoms, and compassion deepens. But they must be approached with preparation, respect, and knowledge—the themes to which we now turn.
If there is one lesson that transcends all others in the field of psychedelic exploration, it is that the inner and outer conditions of an experience—the set and the setting—determine far more than the chemical itself. 'Set' refers to the mindset: your expectations, mood, and personality; 'setting' refers to your physical and social environment. Together they shape the meaning, tone, and depth of the journey.
Every time I help someone prepare, I invite them to treat the setting as sacred space. The room should feel safe, quiet, and aesthetically nurturing. Lighting, music, art, and temperature all subtly affect the unfolding of the experience. The inner space matters even more: entering with intention transforms the session from a random event into a meaningful journey. Intention might be to heal from grief, to explore creativity, to face fear, or to touch something divine. Yet intention should not become expectation, for psychedelics often surprise us with lessons beyond what we consciously request.
Over years of guiding sessions, I’ve seen over and over how set and setting make the difference between confusion and clarity, between fear and revelation. One person can take the same dosage under stress or distraction and find chaos, while another, prepared and centered, touches boundless serenity. Controlling set and setting doesn’t guarantee bliss—it ensures that whatever appears has context, compassion, and room to be understood.
