Key Chapters
One of the greatest scientific revelations of the past few decades has been the discovery of the human microbiome—the trillions of microorganisms that inhabit our gut and function as partners in maintaining life. For much of my career, I saw these microbes as mere bystanders, but advanced research made clear that they are active participants in regulating brain chemistry, mood, and even decision-making.
The gut microbes communicate with your nervous system through metabolites, neurotransmitters, and immune mediators. Some produce short-chain fatty acids that calm inflammation in the brain; others influence the production of serotonin, the “happiness” neurotransmitter, most of which is made in the gut itself. Microbes can even modulate how we perceive stress. Experiments with mice have shown that animals raised in sterile environments—without gut bacteria—exhibit exaggerated stress responses and altered behavior. Humans are no different.
In my own laboratory, we found that stress and diet could reshape the microbial ecosystem in dramatic ways. Diets high in processed foods decrease microbial diversity and increase inflammation, while Mediterranean-style diets rich in plant fibers foster microbes that promote resilience and calm. This means every meal you eat contributes to programming your emotional brain.
Yet, the microbiome doesn’t act alone—it interacts continuously with the gut’s nervous system and immune defenses. When harmony prevails among these players, signals to the brain enhance mood stability and cognitive function. When imbalance sets in, as in dysbiosis, the inflammatory signals reach your brain, influencing anxiety, depression, and even decision-making about food. It is a two-way street: your thoughts and emotional states, including chronic stress, can disturb your microbial partners. The key insight here is that nurturing gut microbes is not about probiotics alone; it’s about creating an environment of emotional and nutritional stability that supports the entire ecosystem of the self.
