Most stress arises when Self 1 overrides Self 2. When you worry about what others think, when you compare your progress to impossible standards, or when you berate yourself for not being enough—these are signs that Self 1 is in charge. This friction creates tension in both body and mind. You tighten muscles that don’t need to be tense; your attention fragments; you lose contact with the present moment. The result isn’t higher achievement, but paralysis masked as productivity.
To manage stress, therefore, we have to observe—not attack—this inner critic. The goal is not to silence Self 1 through force, but to cease identifying with it. Notice its voice: the musts, the shoulds, the predictions of failure. Simply observing this commentary as mental noise loosens its hold. And as Self 1 quiets, Self 2 naturally comes forward. You begin to act more intuitively, and your sense of competence strengthens.
I’ve seen executives recover from burnout by recognizing this interplay. When they stop trying to control every outcome and instead trust their deeper intelligence, both performance and wellbeing improve. This is the paradox at the heart of the Inner Game approach: you succeed most easily when you stop trying so hard to succeed.
Awareness is where transformation begins. You cannot change what you do not notice. In the realm of stress, awareness means observing your inner experience without judgment—watching your thoughts, emotions, and body sensations as they arise. Most of us react to stress automatically: our minds judge, our bodies tighten, and soon we’re lost in a mental storm. But the moment you begin to notice, rather than react, something shifts. You step outside the whirlpool.
I often ask clients to practice simple awareness exercises: feel the tension in your shoulders; hear the tone of your inner talk; notice your breath when under pressure. None of these are about 'fixing' yourself—they are about seeing clearly. When awareness deepens, you stop being fused with your stress response. You start to see it as an event occurring within you, not as your identity.
This witnessing stance, as it matures, leads to an interesting discovery: awareness itself is calming. The act of mindful observation interrupts the chain reaction of stress physiology. It allows your nervous system to reset and your perception to widen. You begin to respond with presence rather than resistance.
Stress becomes a teacher here—it shows you the areas of unconscious tension in your life. Instead of resisting it, you learn from it. Each time you return to awareness, you reclaim your freedom of choice. You no longer have to act from fear or habit; you can choose how to respond. This shift marks the beginning of stress mastery.
