Key Chapters
Cornucopia begins, as fairy tales so often do, in comfort and illusion. Its king, Fred the Fearless, takes pride in his golden robes and polished crown but is neither fearless nor particularly wise. The wealth of Cornucopia lies in its food — pastries from Chouxville, cheeses from Kurdsburg, wines from Jeroboam — and its complacency lies in the hearts of its people. They are happy because they have been told to be.
But beyond the fertile fields and fragrant bakeries lies the misty Marshlands, a forgotten northern region shunned by all. It is there that the legend of the Ickabog looms, a story told to make children behave. Parents warn that the Ickabog will come for greedy or disobedient little ones, though no one truly believes in it — until fear becomes a tool for power.
Fred, insecure of his courage, lets vanity lead him northward on a foolhardy quest to confront the creature no one has seen. Among those who accompany him is Major Beamish, a steadfast soldier and father to young Bert. What begins as a display of royal bravery ends in tragedy: Beamish dies in the marsh, and the king, terrified and confused, allows his ambitious advisors — Lord Spittleworth and Lord Flapoon — to twist the tale into one of monstrous danger.
In that single night, the myth becomes law. Cornucopia’s laughter falters. A story meant to frighten children turns into a weapon to control adults. Thus, the Ickabog comes to life — not as a beast of claws and teeth, but as a lie powerful enough to shape a kingdom.
Spittleworth and Flapoon, those serpents in satin, seize their moment. They tell the people the Ickabog slew Major Beamish and nearly killed the king. To protect the realm, they create a bogus 'Ickabog Defense Brigade' and quietly levy taxes to fund it. The money flows to their coffers, the fear flows through the people’s hearts, and the king, cocooned in flattery, knows nothing of truth.
Bert grows up fatherless, believing his father perished valiantly. Daisy Dovetail, his best friend, suffers worse: her father, the royal carpenter, is framed by Spittleworth and unjustly imprisoned. Daisy is orphaned and cast into poverty, her bright spirit tested by loss and injustice. Where Bert learns to trust authority, Daisy learns to question it — two paths that will diverge before they meet again.
With every decree, Cornucopia withers. The merchants are taxed to ruin, the poor starve, and the marshlands become forbidden territory. Every rebellion is crushed beneath the pretext of national safety. The Ickabog, still unseen, becomes the explanation for everything — a perfect lie that demands eternal obedience. What Spittleworth doesn’t realize is that lies, like monsters, can devour their masters.
And yet, out of this darkness, seeds of resistance grow. In unlikely places — among bakers, soldiers, children — whispers of truth persist. Daisy refuses to forget her father. Somewhere north, a real mystery stirs, one that will shatter the illusion upon which Cornucopia’s power rests.
