Key Chapters

Every woman in our world grows up absorbing a relentless stream of messages about what it means to be sexy. These messages come from television screens, social media feeds, religious doctrines, and family conversations — often contradictory, but overwhelmingly prescriptive. They teach us that sexuality is a commodity: something to be managed, displayed, and evaluated. From a young age, many learn that their value is tied to their appearance or their ability to attract attention, while simultaneously being warned of the dangers of 'too much' sexuality. This double bind leaves countless women feeling alienated from their own sexual selves.

In my work as a therapist, I’ve seen how these cultural scripts shape intimate relationships. When we internalize that our sexuality is something to perform rather than inhabit, we lose touch with our authentic desires. We might engage in behaviors that look confident on the outside but feel empty or pressured inside. We might hide parts of ourselves, or seek validation from partners who mirror the cultural gaze. The performance of sexy becomes armor — glittering, but suffocating.

The first step toward liberation is to see the performance for what it is: a learned pattern, not an immutable truth. Once we begin to recognize the ways we’ve been conditioned, we can start to question which parts of 'sexy' actually feel true for us, and which belong to someone else’s expectation. This is the beginning of taking sexy back.

Sexual self-awareness is the heart of empowerment. It means cultivating the courage to turn your attention inward — to ask yourself what you feel, what you need, what you value — and to trust those answers. In a world that teaches women to please others, this turn inward is radical.

To develop self-awareness, we must understand our emotional landscapes. Many of us have been praised for caretaking others, but rarely taught to articulate our own boundaries or desires. Self-awareness invites us to name our emotions without shame, to notice the physical and emotional cues that arise around sexuality, and to approach them with curiosity rather than judgment.

When you are able to identify your story — the influences that shaped your beliefs about sex — you create space for choice. You no longer act from unconscious scripts. You begin to relate to your sexuality as a living, breathing part of your identity. Authentic sexual empowerment is not about behaving boldly; it’s about knowing yourself deeply, and aligning your choices with that knowing.
