I’ve seen talented individuals derailed not by lack of skill, but by relational mismanagement—trusting the wrong person, confiding in someone who couldn’t carry their truth, or investing in a dynamic that constantly drained them.
Relational intelligence starts by acknowledging this influence and taking ownership of it. When you begin to see relationships as spiritual assignments rather than random encounters, you stop wasting time forcing what doesn’t fit. You also stop feeling guilty for drawing boundaries. The people around you should contribute to your rhythm, not disrupt it. Healthy relationships elevate your clarity, productivity, and joy; unhealthy ones distort your perspective, exhaust your emotions, and pull you away from purpose.
To truly live with relational intelligence, you must assess why each person occupies space in your life. Not all connections are equal, and it’s your job to discern them. The moment you do, you’ll see a shift not only in your emotional stability but also in your results in love, leadership, and work.
I often describe relational intelligence through the framework of five relationship types: friends, associates, assignments, advisors, and adversaries. Each requires distinct engagement.
Friends are those rare few who love you for you. Their motivation is not utility but connection. They see your value beyond circumstance and are invested in your growth. Yet true friends are few. Often, we confuse associates—people who share mutual interests for a season—with friends. Associates can be wonderful partners for collaboration, but their relationship thrives on common goals, not intimacy. When the project ends, so often does the connection.
Assignments are relationships designed for a purpose that goes beyond you. These are people you’re called to help—individuals whose journey intersects yours because you have something to give. Many of us mistake these relationships for friendships and end up heartbroken when the recipient moves on. Advisors, conversely, are those from whom you receive wisdom. Their value lies in their perspective and experience. Relational intelligence teaches us to listen carefully yet maintain proper boundaries.
Then there are adversaries—the individuals who challenge you not because they wish you well but because they test your resilience, sharpen your faith, and expose weaknesses that need refinement. Understanding adversaries is crucial. They’re not villains to be hated but teachers whose presence reveals your strength.
When you identify these categories correctly, your emotional energy redistributes. You stop trying to make assignments into friends and recognize that sometimes relational closure is divine completion, not rejection.
