In the Middle Ages, the idea of courtly love painted love as transcendence—an ennobling force that could elevate the soul through devotion and self-restraint. By contrast, the romantic ideal that emerged in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries celebrated passion, spontaneity, and the fusion of souls.
