Key Chapters

The tragedy of George Floyd serves as a chilling backdrop to my exploration of compliance. When I watch the footage, I am not just haunted by the image of Derek Chauvin’s knee; I am haunted by the two rookie officers, Alex Kueng and Thomas Lane. These men, one only on his third day and the other on his fourth day of the job, followed Chauvin’s lead despite their visible hesitation and the cries of horrified bystanders. They were the closest to the knee and could have moved it, yet they didn’t. This moment of compliance is a universal phenomenon that happens everywhere—in homes, classrooms, and workplaces. I recall my own failure to defy in a much less grave but telling situation. Years ago, I visited an emergency room with chest pain. Despite my medical training and my knowledge that a CT scan was unnecessary and potentially harmful due to radiation, I agreed to it simply because a confident doctor in a white coat told me I had to. I didn't want the scan, but I also didn't want the medical team to think I didn't trust their judgment. That critical moment of compliance reflects a terrifying reality: we often comply before we have time to think at all. The distance between our believed values and our actual behavior is often enormous, regardless of whether the stakes are life-threatening or trivial. We are hardwired to prioritize obedience over disruption, and recognizing this is the first step toward reclaiming our power.

My name, Sunita, means good in Sanskrit, representing one who has good conduct or behavior. Growing up as the daughter of Indian immigrants in northern England, I was given a world-class education in how to be obedient. I was a swotty student who preferred books and mastered my subjects to receive the praise that came with being good. From a young age, we are all taught that compliance is a survival technique. Our brains are actually shaped by this training. When we are young and our neural structures are forming, being rewarded for compliant behavior releases dopamine, the transmitter of pleasure. This builds and strengthens neural pathways for compliance. Conversely, disobedient behavior rarely provides that same rush, causing those pathways to weaken or fail to develop entirely. I learned through imitation of my parents, teachers, and peers that belonging to the group required mirroring their actions. This is why our world runs on compliance—it allows for cooperation and harmony in civil society. However, unwavering compliance has devastating consequences, leading individuals to lose their autonomy and governments to devolve into authoritarianism. My childhood was filled with rules that were often strict for a reason; my parents sacrificed everything for my education, which they saw as a ticket to freedom. But I also felt the contradiction of being told to be both good and independent. I witnessed a teacher beating a boy for a minor mistake, and I learned then that the way to avoid punishment was to smile and do exactly what was asked of you. This neurological and social conditioning is powerful, but it is not our destiny. We can learn to think differently once we understand how we were wired to obey.
