Key Chapters
Most people think of a budget as a restriction, a list of 'no’s' that tell you what you can’t do. But what if I told you a budget is the exact opposite—it’s permission. A written budget gives you control, direction, and freedom. It tells your money where to go instead of wondering where it went. In my world, we call this a zero-based budget, meaning every dollar has a job. You start each month with your income, you assign every dollar to a category—spending, saving, giving—and when you finish, your income minus your outgo equals zero.
Creating a zero-based budget takes practice, but it’s the only way to make sure you’re the one in charge. It’s about being proactive, not reactive. Every couple I’ve ever coached, every single parent trying to dig out of the hole, every family that’s ever shouted 'We’re debt-free!'—they all started with a plan on paper, on purpose. The first time you sit down and do this, you may find that you’ve been overspending in areas you didn’t even notice. That’s okay. Awareness is the first step to change.
Once you consistently live on a budget, you’ll begin to experience something powerful—a sense of control. You’ll see how freeing it is to live on less than you make. You’ll start to build margins in your life. And that margin becomes your foundation for everything else in this book. Without a written plan, you’re aiming at nothing. With it, you’re finally driving your money in the direction of your dreams.
The Baby Steps are the core of this entire program. They are a proven, step-by-step path that lets you focus on one clear goal at a time. Too many people try to do everything at once—save a little, pay off a little, invest a little—and never gain traction. Momentum happens when you simplify your path.
Baby Step One is saving $1,000 as a starter emergency fund. This is your safety net, your shield from life’s little surprises. Next, Baby Step Two is where the real battle begins—paying off all debts (except the house) using the debt snowball method. You list your debts from smallest to largest, attack the smallest one with intensity, and as each debt disappears, you roll that payment into the next one. The math isn’t always perfect, but behavior wins every time. Seeing progress builds motivation, and motivation fuels perseverance.
After you’re debt-free except for your home, Baby Step Three helps you complete your emergency fund—three to six months of expenses set aside. This is where peace starts to settle in. No more relying on credit cards or loans when something goes wrong. From there, Baby Step Four moves you into wealth building—investing 15% of your income into retirement. Baby Step Five focuses on saving for your children’s college education, Baby Step Six on paying off your home early, and Baby Step Seven on building wealth and giving generously. Each step builds on the last, each one increasing your stability and freedom.
This process works because it’s simple, intentional, and focused. You don’t have to multitask. You just have to commit. Millions have followed these steps and discovered that financial peace isn’t just possible—it’s predictable when you follow the plan.
