Key Chapters

When Eric Berne first formulated Transactional Analysis, his brilliant insight was deceptively simple: every person’s personality is composed of three ego states—Parent, Adult, and Child (often abbreviated as P, A, and C). In practicing TA, I came to realize how these states could illuminate every conversation, every emotional trigger, and every life choice.

The Parent is the voice we internalized from authority figures. It carries nurturing warmth but also critical rules. Within you, it may sound like your mother’s warning or your father’s expectations. The Child is the spontaneous, feeling self you were before learning to censor your emotions. It can be joyful, adaptable, creative—but also rebellious or fearful. The Adult is your rational, data-processing self, capable of evaluating the present reality without distortions from the past.

Every time we interact—with ourselves or others—one of these states takes the lead. A Parent-to-Child exchange (‘You should know better!’ → ‘I’m sorry, I’ll try harder!’) sustains old patterns. But when we learn to speak from our Adult to someone else’s Adult, communication becomes clear, respectful, and empowering.

Understanding these dynamics is transformative. When we recognize that our outbursts, guilt, or automatic defenses arise from our scripts and ego states, we can stop blaming ourselves and start observing ourselves. While the Parent and Child are constant companions, the Adult is our key to freedom. It helps us discern which internal voices serve our growth and which merely repeat outdated lessons.

In the Gestalt spirit, awareness comes first. By bringing into consciousness which ego state we are operating from at a given moment, we begin to integrate them. This leads not to suppression of the Parent or Child, but to harmony—each ego state enriching the others, contributing wisdom, vitality, and balance to the self who was indeed born to win.

Through decades of counseling, I have yet to meet a person without a life script. Script is TA’s term for the unconscious life plan we draft in childhood, long before we can logically defend it. Each script contains decisions made to survive and be loved. A child who heard 'You’ll never amount to much' might unconsciously decide to fail, thereby proving the parents right and thereby belonging. Another might hear 'You can do anything' but interpret that as pressure to be perfect. In either case, those early decisions turn into adult behavior patterns, repeated until examined.

TA helps us discover the script’s core: its limiting beliefs, the permissions withheld, and the prohibitions accepted. Gestalt work complements this by letting you experience those voices again, in real time, within your body and emotions. Sitting in an empty-chair dialogue, you might place your inner Parent across from your Child and listen to the directives you once absorbed. As you give the Child permission to speak—to say what it never could—you begin to loosen the script’s hold.

Awareness is the first rewriting tool, but new decisions follow. You may choose to reject a 'Don’t be close' message and instead embrace the risk of intimacy. You may replace 'Don’t succeed' with 'I allow myself to achieve.’ Each conscious decision, validated by Adult reasoning and nurtured by your real experiences in the present, rewrites the story line you once treated as fate.

The power lies not in erasing the past, but in transforming your relationship to it. As you integrate the experiences behind your script, you realize that the child who made those choices did so with limited data and love as the only strategy for survival. The adult you are now has access to far richer understanding and freedom. Winning starts the moment you recognize: this script is not me; it is something I once wrote—and I am the author who can revise it.
