Key Chapters

The first step in taking our Big Leap is to see the inner saboteur for what it is. I call it the 'Upper Limit Problem.' It’s the built-in thermostat of your well-being—a self-regulating mechanism that keeps you at a familiar level of happiness, success, and love. As soon as you surpass that threshold, discomfort, guilt, or fear arise, and you unconsciously do something to return to the old equilibrium. You pick a fight, get sick, lose focus, or create a crisis. Sound familiar? It’s not personal weakness but a protective program taught by your earliest experiences. You were trained in how much good you’re allowed to have.

During your Big Leap Year, you’ll spend time observing this dynamic in real time. You’ll start to feel when you’re crossing your upper limit: the tightening of your chest, the sudden critical thought, the urge to procrastinate. Instead of condemning these reactions, I’ll ask you to bless them—they’re signals that expansion is happening. Each time you notice the impulse to contract and breathe through it, you reclaim a little more territory from fear. Over months, this practice restructures your nervous system to feel safe in greater joy and creativity. That is the first great shift of the year: replacing self-sabotage with self-acceptance, until success feels natural, not dangerous.

Once you stop fighting your own expansion, you can discover where your life truly belongs: the Zone of Genius. In *The Big Leap* I drew four zones—the Zone of Incompetence, where you struggle at what others do better; the Zone of Competence, where you perform adequately but without spark; the Zone of Excellence, where you function smoothly and may even be rewarded—but often at the cost of vitality; and finally, the Zone of Genius, where your unique capacities flow effortlessly and your contribution lifts others. Most people live and die in their Zone of Excellence because it feels safe and respectable. But living there too long breeds quiet despair.

During this guided year, I invite you to identify activities that make time disappear, that bring out your most natural joy. You’ll track moments of flow, however fleeting, until a pattern emerges. Gradually, the cognitive recognition becomes embodied knowing. You begin to sculpt a life where your daily actions align with that genius rhythm. The paradox is that genius requires neither strain nor superiority; it’s simply the state in which what you love and what you do converge. My personal practice, and what I teach others, is to keep asking: 'How can I spend more of my time in my Zone of Genius today?' One honest answer a day is enough to rewire your future.
