I never worried that he’d maneuver for credit or undercut a decision behind closed doors. That level of confidence liberated both of us to pursue ideas fearlessly.
Communication follows naturally from trust. It’s less about constant agreement and more about the assurance that your partner will listen with respect. Frank and I divided responsibilities naturally. I concentrated on creative expansion—films, television, theme parks—while Frank focused on the corporate architecture that would support our ambitions. We had a rule: no surprises. Every decision, from acquisitions to casting choices, was discussed openly. This dual leadership became the company’s heartbeat.
Together we took bold risks. *The Little Mermaid*, *Beauty and the Beast*, *The Lion King*—films that redefined animation in an era when the world thought hand-drawn animation was obsolete. Frank’s steady hand reassured investors, while I championed the creative teams. That balanced dynamic allowed us to be daring yet financially responsible. The synergy worked because we trusted each other completely.
I often say that Frank was my compass. In moments when I was overwhelmed by possibilities, he reminded me of the mountain in front of us. Conversely, when he was mired in the numbers, I reminded him why we climbed in the first place. His tragic passing in 1994 left an emptiness that no restructure or new hire could fill. The company lost more than an executive; it lost half of its center of gravity.
