Key Chapters
For generations, women have been taught to follow rules that weren’t made for us. These old rules told us to be obedient, to keep our heads down, and to wait patiently for recognition. They conditioned us to compete with each other for the few seats offered at the table rather than to build our own. When I look back at my early years in soccer, I see how heavily those expectations weighed on me. Even though I was playing at the highest level, I often felt that being ambitious made me selfish, that claiming space made me disruptive.
These old rules weren’t written out of malice—they were written out of fear. Fear of a world that couldn’t imagine women wielding power freely and fear of what might happen if we did. But those rules isolate us. They tell us to shrink, to be grateful for crumbs, and to believe that our value depends on pleasing others. The consequence is predictable: when one woman rises, others are made to feel less than. We turn against each other instead of turning toward each other.
I learned to question those rules the hard way. There were times I felt sidelined and silenced, even while playing for my country. But I came to realize that obedience is not the same as respect—and that following someone else’s playbook never creates transformation. The old rules might have gotten us here, but they won’t take us further. This is where the new rules begin.
Let’s start rewriting together. The new rules are not just slogans—they are a way of living with courage, community, and conviction. They begin with a radical act: claiming your power. Not waiting for someone to hand it to you, not asking for permission to lead, but recognizing that you already have what you need to step forward.
The new rules ask us to trust our gut, to celebrate our voice, and to turn competition into collaboration. Trusting your instincts doesn’t mean you’ll never make mistakes. It means you’ll honor the part of you that sees clearly even when others can’t. It means choosing your path based on conviction, not conformity. Supporting others doesn’t weaken your own power—it multiplies it. Every time one woman rises, she clears a path for others. The new leadership isn’t about taking turns at the podium; it’s about creating space for all voices to be heard.
I’ve seen this firsthand on the field. The strongest teams don’t revolve around one star—they revolve around trust. Every player knows her role and believes in the collective strength of the group. That’s what I’m asking for in life beyond the game: a new model of leadership that lifts everyone together. The old scoreboards don’t define us anymore; our unity does.
