The journey begins with *Bonds*, a novel within the novel, supposedly written by a now-forgotten author, Harold Vanner. His story recounts the ascent of Benjamin and Helen Rask—a pair whose fortunes seem as immense as their human isolation. The Rasks move through the 1920s financial world like mathematical principles incarnate, precise and unyielding, their lives defined by numbers more than emotions.

Through Vanner’s fictional prose, readers experience the choreography of wealth: the movement from the trading floor’s chaos to the silent cathedrals of private clubs, from glittering ballrooms to a vast and empty mansion. Benjamin Rask dominates markets with the detached intellect of a chess master; Helen moves in his orbit with a mysterious grace that soon shades into detachment. Wealth has insulated them from the world, and that insulation curdles into separation even from themselves.

Vanner’s voice carries the certainty of an omniscient narrator, yet something in it exudes artificiality. His Benjamin seems more symbol than man, his Helen a construct of tragedy. What begins as a moral fable—the tale of ambition, fortune, and inevitable downfall—turns into a meditation on perception. Helen’s gradual withdrawal, culminating in her confinement to a sanatorium, reads as a punishment not for madness but for opacity; she refuses to perform the role others script for her.

The boundary between truth and fabrication erodes instantly, establishing the terrain for everything that follows. When *Bonds* ends, you are meant to feel not the closure of a story but the echo of a question—who benefits when a life is turned into legend?

Enter Andrew Bevel, the man behind the mirror. In *My Life*, he steps forward as author, asserting his version of events. Outraged by Vanner’s misrepresentation—which he interprets as both libel and theft—Bevel attempts to reclaim his name by dictating his autobiography. But unlike Vanner’s complete fable, Bevel’s memoir exists in fragments, unfinished and riddled with contradictions. The cracks in his voice are the novel’s quiet revelations.

From Bevel’s perspective, he is the visionary architect of modern finance—a man whose intuition transcends calculation, whose genius lies in order and foresight. To him, Vanner’s caricature of Benjamin Rask is an insult not just to his business acumen but to his moral fiber. He insists on his devotion to his late wife Mildred, presenting their marriage as a partnership of noble ideals, philanthropy, and mutual respect. But as he revises and rearranges his sentences, we glimpse how carefully he edits out discomforting truths.

His manuscript becomes an instrument of control. The reader senses his unease whenever Mildred’s intellect hovers too close to his own theories, or when the narrative hints that her insights may have shaped his success. Bevel’s memoir is not a window but a mirror room, each reflection trimmed to perfection. In portraying himself as a misunderstood pioneer, he exposes the fragility of self-authored greatness.

From my vantage as the novelist, this section is where the theme of authorship turns explicit: the act of writing becomes a performance of power. Bevel wants mastery over how he will be remembered; he cannot bear the idea that someone else—a mere writer—might define him. His voice, brittle and defensive, reveals the pathology of privilege: to own not only assets but interpretation itself. Through Bevel’s eye, truth mutates into a commodity, polished and traded on the market of reputation.
