Key Chapters

At the heart of my work is the simple idea that every day can be Day One — a clean slate, a moment to recommit to the kind of leader you choose to be. Too often, we live as if we’re waiting for some life-changing milestone — graduation, promotion, the new year — before we start pursuing our values in earnest. We tell ourselves that real leadership begins when circumstances are perfect. But in truth, the only moment you can start leading is the present one.

The Day One mindset is about eliminating the illusion of ‘someday.’ On Day One, there’s no history dragging you backward and no future overwhelming you. There’s just the present moment and the question: 'What behaviors will reflect my values today?' Every day you wake up is another chance to answer that question with integrity.

I learned this lesson not from corporate boardrooms or leadership conferences, but from observing how people show up for each other in everyday life — a friend who listens when someone needs to be heard, a colleague who gives credit rather than taking it, a stranger who extends kindness with no expectation of return. These are not random acts of decency; they are daily acts of leadership. Once you start noticing and naming them, you’ll see leadership everywhere, including within yourself.

The beauty of Day One is that it removes guilt and perfectionism from the equation. You don’t need to be perfect; you only need to be intentional. If yesterday was a failure, forget it — today is Day One again. That reset is freeing, and it’s what allows growth to take root.

You can’t live your leadership values until you know what they are. That seems simple, but most people never take the time to define them. Instead, we live by values inherited from parents, employers, or cultures that tell us what’s acceptable or admirable. To live as intentional leaders, we have to uncover the values that are truly ours.

In my workshops, I challenge participants to identify the moments in their lives when they felt most proud, most fulfilled, and most connected to others. Those moments are clues. They reveal the invisible threads of your core principles — compassion, courage, fairness, growth, empathy, whatever they may be. The process isn’t academic; it’s emotional. When you start naming these values, you begin reconnecting to the best version of yourself.

Once you have that clarity, leadership stops being abstract. It becomes measurable. You can start asking: ‘Did I act in line with my values today?’ That’s not a judgment; it’s a compass. It guides you even when the world’s noise tries to pull you off course. Learning your values isn’t about perfection. It’s about awareness, the willingness to say: 'I may not always live up to my values, but I’ll never stop trying.'
